THE WEDDING GOWN TIMELINE: WHEN TO ORDER YOUR GOWN IN AUSTRALIA

One of the most common questions we receive at Ivory Bride is also one of the most important: when should I start looking for my wedding dress?

The short answer is earlier than you might expect. The longer answer is here.

How far in advance should you order a wedding dress in Australia?

Most bridal gowns require between four and eight months to be made to order from the time of purchase. In Australia, where gowns are often shipped from European or international studios, this lead time is standard. and non-negotiable.

This means that if your wedding is in November, you should ideally be ordering by March at the very latest. Earlier is always better.

When should I start looking at wedding dresses?

Start exploring twelve to fourteen months before your wedding date.

This gives you space to visit multiple boutiques without pressure, to try different silhouettes, and to fall in love slowly rather than in a rush. The best decision is rarely the fastest one.

Many brides find their gown on the first appointment. Others need three or four visits before they feel certain. Both are completely valid. What matters is that you have enough time for the process to unfold naturally.

What happens after I order my gown?

Once your gown is ordered, the studio begins production. From there, the general timeline looks like this:

Order placed → gown enters production queue

Four to eight months later → gown arrives at the boutique

Appointment to check the gown → any issues identified early

Alterations begin → typically six to eight weeks before the wedding

Final fitting → one to two weeks before the wedding day

What if my wedding is sooner than twelve months away?

Don't panic, but do move quickly.

Many boutiques carry sample gowns and off-the-rack styles that can be purchased immediately. Rush orders are sometimes available with certain designers, though they may carry additional costs. And a beautifully curated sample sale can be the most unexpected, perfect solution.

At Ivory Bride, we work with brides across all timelines. The key is honest communication about your date so we can guide you toward what is genuinely possible, and beautiful.

Is there a right season to start bridal shopping in Melbourne?

Melbourne brides tend to book appointments most heavily in spring and early summer, which means boutiques are busiest from August through November.

If you want more relaxed appointment availability and a quieter, more personal experience, consider visiting in the cooler months: June, July, or August. The gowns don't change. The unhurried pace does.

Start earlier than you think you need to. You will thank yourself for it.

Hugs, Kayla
