Do I need a special bra for my wedding dress?

That depends entirely on your gown.

A strapless gown typically requires no bra at all, quality bridal gowns are constructed with internal boning and cups designed to support the body without external help. Wearing a bra underneath a properly fitted strapless gown can actually disrupt the fit the gown was designed to create.

For gowns with a lower back, a conventional bra isn't possible. Adhesive bras, low-back bra converters, or built-in cups are the options here. Your alterations specialist can often add cups directly to the gown's lining.

A gown with a higher back and conventional structure accommodates a standard bra where needed, though seamless and smooth-finish styles are always preferable under structured fabric.

Should I wear shapewear under my wedding dress?

It depends on what you are hoping it will do.

Shapewear worn under a well-fitted, properly altered bridal gown rarely adds meaningful visual change. The gown itself, with its boning and tailoring, is already doing the shaping work.

Where shapewear does help is in smoothing lines under very sleek, thin fabrics, silk or satin gowns where every layer reads through the fabric. A light, seamless slip or smoothing short in that case creates a cleaner line.

The risk with shapewear is comfort. Eight to twelve hours is a long time to wear constrictive undergarments. Whatever you choose, wear it for several hours before your wedding day to be certain you can move, breathe, and dance freely.

What colour underwear should I wear under a white wedding dress?

Counter-intuitively: nude, not white.

White underwear shows through white fabric far more visibly than nude-toned underwear does. The nude tone disappears against the skin and creates no visual contrast beneath the gown.

Seamless styles eliminate visible lines. Laser-cut edges are even better.

What about a slip or petticoat?

A slip adds a layer between your skin and the gown's inner lining, which can make the gown more comfortable to wear for long periods and helps it move and flow more smoothly.

For very full gowns, tulle ball gowns, gowns with volume in the skirt, a crinoline or petticoat underneath helps maintain structure and shape throughout the day.

Your hem and bodice will be fitted to what you are wearing underneath. If you change your undergarments between your fitting and your wedding day, the fit of the gown changes with them.
