WHAT TO BRING TO A WEDDING DRESS APPOINTMENT: A GUIDE FOR MELBOURNE BRIDES

Your first bridal appointment is one of those mornings you will carry with you long after the wedding day itself. The right preparation means you arrive feeling calm, open, and ready to be surprised.

Here is everything worth bringing, and a few things worth leaving behind.

What undergarments should I wear to a wedding dress appointment?

This is the most important practical consideration, and one that many brides only think about on the morning of.

Wear seamless, nude-toned underwear. A strapless bra is helpful, but not essential, your stylist can guide you once you are in the gowns. What matters more is that you feel comfortable and aren't distracted by anything underneath.

Avoid shapewear on your first visit. You are there to explore silhouettes and understand your shape as it is. There is time later to consider what layers work best for you.

Should I bring photos or inspiration to my appointment?

Yes, but hold them loosely.

A mood board, a handful of saved images, a Pinterest collection: all of these are useful starting points. They tell your stylist something about the aesthetic you are drawn to, the mood you want to create, the version of yourself you are reaching toward.

But the best appointments are ones where you stay curious. Sometimes the gown that surprises you is the one that stays with you forever.

How many people should I bring to a bridal appointment?

Bring one or two people whose opinion you genuinely trust.

More than that, and the appointment can begin to feel like a committee. Voices multiply. Opinions collide. The one that most needs to be heard, yours, can get lost.

Choose someone who knows you well, who will be honest without being unkind, and who will celebrate you regardless of the gown.

Do I need to bring anything else?

A few quiet extras make a real difference:

- Hair ties or pins, so you can easily put your hair up or down to test necklines

- A few reference photos on your phone, easily accessible

- An open schedule, avoid rushing before or after your appointment

- Comfortable footwear that slips on and off easily

- A sense of openness. This is perhaps the most important thing you can walk through the door with.

What should I leave at home?

Leave the expectations.

Not the excitement, bring all of that. But the rigid version of what you think you should look like, the comparison to someone else's wedding, the idea that you have to love the first gown you try,  leave those at the door.

The best brides we meet are the ones who arrive ready to be moved. And more often than not, they are.

Hugs, Kayla
